A family travelling with an eight-year-old and a two-year-old needs a safari that doesn't ask too much of either of them in one day. This trip opens in Samburu , quieter, more arid, and full of species the Masai Mara doesn't have , before working south through the Rift Valley lakes into the Mara itself.

This is one of the Kenya itineraries we've planned for a family before , nine nights, ten days across Nairobi, Samburu, Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara, built for two adults and two children (ages 8 and 2) travelling together. It's shared here to show what a family safari through Kenya could look like. A version built around your own family's size, pace and dates would look a little different , and that's the point.

Samburu opens the trip with two full days of game drives in a landscape drier and less crowded than the Mara , the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra and gerenuk found here don't show up further south. A boat ride at Lake Naivasha and a full day at Lake Nakuru, home to both black and white rhino, keep the youngest engaged with shorter drives and a change of scenery.

Three nights in the Masai Mara close the safari half of the trip, and the last day in Nairobi is deliberately gentle , the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum, both an easy morning for a two-year-old, before the flight home. If you asked us: build a Nairobi buffer day like this one in on either end of a family safari , it softens the transition in and out of the bush.
