This trip starts with a private safari, then hands the wheel over for the second half, through Oudtshoorn's caves, Tsitsikamma's forests and Hermanus's whale coast, into Cape Town.

This is one of the South Africa itineraries we've planned for a couple before , thirteen nights, fourteen days across Johannesburg, Sun City, Kruger, the Garden Route and Cape Town, built for two adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a self-drive couples' trip through South Africa could look like. A version built around your own dates and pace would look a little different , and that's the point.

The trip opens with two private full-day safaris out of Hazyview, run by a local operator inside Kruger , the kind of game viewing that rewards a couple with nowhere else to be. From Knysna onward, the itinerary switches to self-drive, with a rental car and a rough daily plan rather than a private guide for every stop.

That's deliberate. Oudtshoorn's Cango Caves, Tsitsikamma's Bloukrans Bridge, and Hermanus , with shark cage diving and whale watching from June to November, weather and season permitting , all sit close enough together that a couple can set their own pace between them, stopping longer wherever the day asks for it.
