Four parks, a volcano floor, and three nights of open water at the end , a rhythm that works well when it's just the two of you setting the pace.

August puts you in Tanzania during the dry season, when animals cluster around the remaining water and game viewing is at its most reliable , Tarangire's elephants especially, drawn to the river once the rest of the landscape has dried out.

The Ngorongoro Crater earns its two-night stay. Nowhere else on the route packs this much wildlife into this little ground, and the descent down the crater wall is worth the early start on its own.

If you asked us: don't shorten the Tarangire leg to add a Serengeti day. Tarangire's elephant density is the actual reason to build an August trip around this route, and two nights is the minimum that does it justice.

Tanzania Trip Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Tarangire Arrival

    Land at Arusha and a private guide meets you for the drive into Tarangire National Park , Tanzania's elephant country, where herds gather along the Tarangire River in numbers you won't see anywhere else in the north. Dinner and the first night at Tarangire Simba Lodge.

  2. Day 2

    Tarangire, Full Day

    A full day of game drives through Tarangire's baobab-studded plains, with the option of a packed lunch out in the park or a return to the lodge for a hot one before heading out again for the evening drive.

  3. Day 3

    Serengeti National Park

    The road west runs through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the way to the Serengeti, with a game drive built into the drive itself. Lunch at the lodge, then an afternoon game drive to close the day.

  4. Day 4

    Serengeti, Full Day

    A second day in the Serengeti, working the game viewing circuits at your own pace , a full day out with a packed lunch, or back to camp midday and out again for the evening light.

  5. Day 5

    Ngorongoro Conservation Area

    More game viewing in the Serengeti before the drive to Ngorongoro, arriving in time for lunch and check-in. The afternoon is left free , a rest before the crater tour.

  6. Day 6

    Ngorongoro Crater Tour

    An early start and a 2,000-foot descent into the Ngorongoro Crater, sometimes called the eighth wonder of the world , grassland, swamp, lake and woodland packed into one collapsed volcano, holding one of the densest concentrations of wildlife anywhere. Elephants, buffalo, hippo, wildebeest, black rhino, hyena and lion are all resident here, not just passing through.

  7. Day 7

    Zanzibar

    Lunch at Arusha Coffee Lodge on the way to the airport, then a flight to Zanzibar. The safari ends and the beach begins the same afternoon.

  8. Day 8

    Zanzibar, at Leisure

    A full day on the beach, nothing scheduled.

  9. Day 9

    Zanzibar, at Leisure

    One more day at the resort , the sea, the sand, and not much else.

  10. Day 10

    Departure

    Transfer to Zanzibar airport for the flight home.
