Jiufen's old streets, the sky lantern tradition at Shifen and Sun Moon Lake's temples.
Six nights from Taipei's skyline to Sun Moon Lake, with a gondola through tea country and a sky lantern in between.
Taiwan is an easy first trip to East Asia for a couple. The cities are clean and simple to move around, the food is excellent at every price, and a short train ride separates the skyscrapers of Taipei from mountain lakes and flower farms.
This is one of the Taiwan itineraries we've planned for a couple before, six nights, seven days across Taipei and Taichung, built for two adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a couples' trip through Taiwan could look like. A version built around your own dates and pace would look a little different, and that's the point.
Why This Trip
Late February to March brings cherry blossom season to the highlands. It is cool enough for a day at Wuling Farm in comfort, and the mist over the Maokong tea plantations makes the gondola ride one of the best views in Taipei.
The trip is built around quiet moments. A sky lantern at Shifen, a dinner in the hills of Yangmingshan, and the Sky Mirror at Sun Moon Lake at sunset are the parts a couple will remember, and the city days are kept light so there is time for all of them. If you asked us: upgrade one gondola ride to the Eye of Maokong crystal cabin, and go after dark. The glass floor is a small thrill by day, but the lit-up city below is what makes it worth the queue.

Day By Day
A private transfer to the hotel, then an afternoon ride on the Maokong Gondola through the tea plantations, with the city lighting up below on the way back down.
A morning at Taipei 101, with the 37-second lift ride to the 89th-floor observatory, the 101st-floor Secret Garden and the open-air Skyline460 at 460 metres. The afternoon is free.
A day trip along the Northeast Coast to Yehliu Geopark and the Queen's Head rock, through Jiufen's lantern-lit lanes, and on to Shifen to write a wish on a sky lantern and release it.
A free morning, then an evening tour into Yangmingshan's volcanic landscape, with a reserved dinner at a scenic restaurant and a stroll through Beitou's hot spring district.
A high-speed train to Taichung, then an afternoon at the Rainbow Village's painted lanes and a sunset walk across the Gaomei Wetlands' boardwalks.
A day trip to Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan's largest lake, for a boat ride, the lakeside temples and the late-afternoon Sky Mirror reflection.
A high-speed train back to Taipei and a private transfer to the airport for the flight home.
