Taiwan is a good choice for friends who like to eat. Every district has a night market, the transport makes a day trip easy, and the group can split up for the afternoon and meet again for dinner without any planning.

This is one of the Taiwan itineraries we've planned for a group of friends before, five nights, six days across Taipei, Yilan and Taichung, built for five adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a friends' trip through Taiwan could look like. A version built around your own group's size, pace and dates would look a little different, and that's the point.

The trip has a different feel each day. One day is the Northeast Coast, with Yehliu, Jiufen, Shifen and the Golden Waterfall, another is a boat to Guishan Island for dolphins and flying fish, and a third is a Taichung day that ends in the Fengjia Night Market, the largest in Taiwan.

Taichung has a few things that suit a group. The Chun Shui Tang teahouse is where bubble tea began, Miyahara looks a little like a set from Harry Potter, and the Chung-she flower market is a short stop on the way to the Gaomei Wetlands at sunset.

If you asked us: do whale-watching and Guishan Island morning first thing, when the sea is calmest. Sea conditions can change the plan, so leave the day after it with nothing fixed.

  1. Day 1

    Taipei Arrival, Taipei 101

    A transfer to the hotel, then an evening at Taipei 101 for the observatory and the open-air Skyline460, followed by dinner at a nearby night market.

  2. Day 2

    Yehliu, Jiufen, Shifen & Golden Waterfall

    A day trip along the Northeast Coast, with Yehliu Geopark's Queen's Head, the old streets of Jiufen, a sky lantern release at Shifen and the Golden Waterfall.

  3. Day 3

    Yilan, Guishan Island Whale-Watching

    A morning boat from Yilan to the volcanic Guishan Island, with dolphins and flying fish along the way, then back to Taipei in the afternoon.

  4. Day 4

    Taipei to Taichung, Miyahara & Gaomei

    A tour from Ximending to Taichung, with the Chung-she flower market, the Miyahara building, Chun Shui Tang and a sunset walk across the Gaomei Wetlands.

  5. Day 5

    Rainbow Village & Fengjia Night Market

    A morning at the Rainbow Village, with the afternoon free and an evening transfer to the Fengjia Night Market to eat and shop at the group's own pace.

  6. Day 6

    Taichung to Taipei, Departure

    A high-speed train back to Taipei and a transfer to the airport for the flight home.
