Wenwu Temple and Ci'en Pagoda at Sun Moon Lake, and the Alishan Forest Railway's logging history.
Eight nights that add a mountain hut, a forest railway and a gorge to the usual Taipei trip.
Most Taiwan itineraries stay in the cities, and for good reason.
This one uses the extra nights to go up: to a night in a mountain hut below Snow Mountain's East Peak, onto the Alishan Forest Railway through ancient cypress trees, and into Taroko Gorge on a day out from Taipei.
This is one of the Taiwan itineraries we've planned for a group before, eight nights, nine days across Taipei, Taichung and the Snow Mountain trail, built for eight adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a longer, more offbeat route through Taiwan could look like. A version built around your own group's size, pace and dates would look a little different, and that's the point.
Why This Trip
Taiwan has more than two hundred peaks above 3,000 metres, and Snow Mountain East Peak is the usual introduction. The trail climbs to the Kupu Observation Deck, with a night in a mountain hut and a sleeping bag provided, and it is the one demanding part of this trip.
The rest of it is easy by comparison.
The Alishan Forest Railway is a slow ride through alpine forest to the Sisters' Ponds and the sacred cypresses, Wuling Farm sits in Shei-Pa National Park, and Sun Moon Lake is covered on a private day tour at the group's own pace.
If you asked us: the hike is for a group that likes to walk, not for everyone. Be honest about fitness before booking, and book early, because hut spaces are limited and the weather on the mountain decides the dates.

Ready When You Are
A marble gorge, a forest railway, a night in a mountain hut, this route gives a group a way into Taiwan's highlands that a city trip would never reach. This is one of the itineraries we've built for a group travelling together before, shared here to show what the trip could look like. A version built for your own group, size, pace and dates, would look a little different.
