Lakes, Hill Towns and a Coastal Drive

Italy has enough range in a short distance that a couple can go from alpine lake to Tuscan hill town to coastal drive without ever feeling like the trip has a theme it's forcing. This route does exactly that, closing in Rome after a self-drive stretch down the Amalfi coast.

This is one of the Italy itineraries we've planned for a couple before ; 11 nights, 12 days starting in Zurich and continuing across Como, Siena, the Amalfi Coast, Positano and Rome, built for 2 adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a couple's trip through Italy could look like. A version built around your own pace and dates would look a little different ; and that's the point.

Why Travel to Italy as a Couple

Why Travel to Italy as a Couple

The self-drive stretch from Rome down to the Amalfi coast is the piece most itineraries skip in favour of a coach tour ; having your own car for the Positano and Capri days means no fixed pickup times and no group pace to keep up with.

Late October keeps the coast markedly quieter than in summer, and Siena's Tuscany day trip runs at its own rhythm rather than fighting peak-season coach traffic.

Travenza Holidays tip: the Lugano and Bellagio boat cruise from Como is worth the early start ; it crosses into Switzerland for an hour, which most people don't expect from an Italy trip.
