Off the Beaten Path in Scandinavia: Arctic Norway & Finnish Lapland

Tromso's northern lights and Rovaniemi's Arctic Circle before the Nordic capitals even start.

Aurora First, Fjords Second

Most Scandinavia itineraries stay south, moving between Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo without ever crossing into the Arctic Circle. This one goes north first , Tromso for the northern lights, Rovaniemi for reindeer sledding and a night in a glass igloo , before it ever reaches a capital city.

This is one of the Scandinavia itineraries we've planned for a couple before , eleven nights, twelve days from Paris into Tromso and Rovaniemi, then on to Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen, built for two adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what an Arctic-first route through Scandinavia could look like. A version built around your own dates and pace would look a little different , and that's the point.

Why Go Arctic First in Scandinavia

Why Go Arctic First in Scandinavia

March keeps the Arctic Circle cold enough for the igloo stay and the northern lights hunt, while still allowing enough daylight for the Sami reindeer sledding and the icebreaker cruise near Rovaniemi.

Tromso and Rovaniemi rarely make it onto a first Scandinavia itinerary , most travellers run out of time before they get that far north. This route puts them first, then lets the trip settle into the more familiar rhythm of Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen once the Arctic leg is done.
