Nature
Glacier 3000, the Matterhorn from Zermatt, and the Glacier Express through the Alps to St Moritz.
A lakeside start, a car-free alpine village, and the slowest train in the world in between.
Switzerland works for families in a way few countries do , the trains run on time, the towns are small enough to navigate on foot, and there's a mountain excursion for every age and energy level. A Swiss Travel Pass turns the whole country into one connected route, so the days move without much friction.
This is one of the Switzerland itineraries we've planned for a family before , 9 nights, 10 days across Montreux, Zermatt, St Moritz and Zurich, built for 2 adults and a 7-year-old travelling together. It's shared here to show what a family trip through Switzerland could look like. A version built around your own family's size, pace and dates would look a little different , and that's the point.
Why This Trip
This route keeps the pace gentle. Two or three nights in each town means no rushed check-outs, and every excursion is built around a cable car or a train rather than a long hike , the Glacier 3000 Peak Walk, the cable cars up to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the Glacier Express itself. A seven-year-old can do all of it without complaint.
July puts the high-altitude stops within reach , Glacier 3000 and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are both open and clear more often than not, and Lake Geneva's towns are at their warmest for evening walks after a day in the mountains.
If you asked us: build in the Cailler chocolate factory near Montreux early in the trip. It sounds like a detour for the kids, but it's one of the better Swiss chocolate stories, and everyone leaves with a full tasting box.
per person, based on 2 adults and 1 child (7 years) travelling together, excluding international airfare

Day By Day
Fly into Geneva and activate the Swiss Travel Pass at the airport before the train to Montreux. The rest of the day is free to walk the lakeside promenade along Lake Geneva.
A morning at the Cailler chocolate factory in Broc , tastings included , followed by an afternoon at Chateau de Chillon, one of Switzerland's better-preserved medieval castles, right on the water.
The cable car up to Glacier 3000 clears 3,000 metres, with the Peak Walk by Tissot suspension bridge and views toward the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and Jungfrau on a clear day.
A train to Zermatt, changing once at Visp. Zermatt is car-free, so the walk from the station to the hotel is part of the introduction to the village.
A series of cable cars climbs to Europe's highest mountain station, with the Matterhorn framed from nearly every angle at the top.
The Glacier Express , reserved seats, panoramic windows , winds through alpine valleys on its way to St Moritz. It's a slow train by design; that's the appeal.
A free day in the resort town: a walk around Lake St Moritz, or time in the cafes and shops at a family pace.
A self-guided train to Europe's largest waterfall, with a boat ride that brings the group close enough to feel the spray.
A late-morning visit to the Lindt chocolate museum in Kilchberg , tastings, exhibits, and the giant chocolate fountain that tends to be the trip's most photographed stop.
Check out and transfer to Zurich Airport for the flight home.
