Sanssouci Palace, Rothenburg's medieval old town and Nuremberg's Imperial city streets.
A 9-night off the beaten path holiday to Germany across Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt.
Nine nights that trade the usual Berlin and Munich checklist for a forest of canals, an Imperial city and a river of castles. Most first trips to Germany stay in the two big cities. This one covers more of the country: the canals of the Spree Forest outside Berlin, medieval Rothenburg and Harburg Castle on the Romantic Road, the old Imperial city of Nuremberg, and the UNESCO-listed Rhine Valley at the very end. This is one of the Germany itineraries we've planned for a group before, nine nights, ten days across Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt, built for ten adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a longer, more offbeat route through Germany could look like. A version built around your own group's size, pace and dates would look a little different, and that's the point.
Why This Trip
The trip is built as three bases rather than one long road trip. Berlin opens it with Potsdam and Sachsenhausen, and a day in the Spree Forest, where the river splits into canals and villages that most Berlin trips never reach. Munich is the base for four days out: the Romantic Road, Nuremberg and the Eagle's Nest. Frankfurt closes the trip as the gateway to the Rhine. A cruise past the castles, with the legends of the Lorelei and a stop in the wine village of Rüdesheim, is a gentle way to finish after nine nights of moving. If you asked us: keep Day 8 slow. It is a train day, and the Rhine cruise the next morning is the relaxed finish the group will want, so a free afternoon in Frankfurt is time well spent.

Ready When You Are
A canal in the Spree Forest, a walled town on the Romantic Road, a castle on the Rhine, nine nights gives a group a Germany that most two-city trips never reach.
