Rafting by Day, Onsen by Night

New Zealand for two works because the adrenaline and the quiet both come standard. A Kaituna River rafting run in the morning can sit next to an Onsen soak the same evening, and nobody has to choose one over the other for the rest of the group.

This is one of the New Zealand itineraries we've planned for a couple before , ten nights, eleven days across Auckland, Rotorua and Queenstown, with a one-way scenic drive to Lake Tekapo and Christchurch, built for two adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a couples' trip through New Zealand could look like. A version built around your own dates and pace would look a little different , and that's the point.

Late May into June keeps Rotorua's geothermal parks quiet and Queenstown's Milford Sound roads clear, with a Mitai Māori Village hangi dinner early in the trip and an Onsen soak overlooking the Shotover River near the end.

The Queenstown-to-Tekapo leg runs as a small-group tour past Lindis Pass and Lake Pukaki rather than a straight transfer , nine hours with the Southern Alps for company, which we think beats a shorter, more direct drive.

New Zealand Trip Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Auckland Arrival & Sky Tower

    A transfer to the hotel, then an evening at the Sky Tower for 360-degree views over Tāmaki Makaurau.

  2. Day 2

    Waitomo Caves & Rotorua Arrival

    A small-group transfer through the Waikato countryside to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, then on to Rotorua. The evening brings a Mitai Māori Village hangi dinner, with a haka performance and glowworms along the river.

  3. Day 3

    Kaituna River Rafting & Hell's Gate

    A half-day rafting run down the Kaituna River, over the 7-metre Tutea Falls, followed by Hell's Gate's mud baths and sulphur spas in the afternoon.

  4. Day 4

    Redwoods Nightlights

    An evening walk through the illuminated Redwoods Treewalk, 700 metres of suspension bridges lit by lanterns above the forest floor.

  5. Day 5

    Queenstown Arrival

    A flight via Wellington to Queenstown, with the evening free.

  6. Day 6

    Skyline Gondola & Unlimited Luge

    The Skyline Gondola up to Bob's Peak, with five luge runs across the Blue and Red tracks over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables.

  7. Day 7

    Milford Sound Cruise

    A full-day coach and cruise through Fiordland, with a buffet lunch onboard past waterfalls and Mitre Peak.

  8. Day 8

    Onsen Spa & Shotover Jet

    A 45-minute private hot tub soak at the Onsen overlooking the Shotover River, then an afternoon jet-boat ride through the Kawarau and Shotover canyons.

  9. Day 9

    Queenstown to Lake Tekapo Via Mt. Cook

    A nine-hour small-group drive through Mt. Cook National Park, with free time along the way, ending overnight at Lake Tekapo.

  10. Day 10

    Lake Tekapo to Christchurch

    A transfer to Christchurch and a visit to the International Antarctic Centre.

  11. Day 11

    Departure

    A private transfer to the airport for the flight home.
