Tashichho Dzong and Punakha Dzong, both still in active religious and administrative use.
Six nights on Bhutan's classic loop, closing on a hike to Tiger's Nest that earns the trip's last morning.
Bhutan's classic loop ; Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and the glacial valley at Phobjikha ; covers dzongs, mountain passes, and one properly demanding hike, all inside a week. For two people, that's enough variety without ever feeling rushed between stops.
This is one of the Bhutan itineraries we've planned for a couple before ; six nights, seven days across Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and Phobjikha, built for two adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a couples' trip through Bhutan could look like. A version built around your own dates and pace would look a little different ; and that's the point.
Why This Trip
Dochula Pass sits at the trip's midpoint, ringed by 108 chortens and, on a clear day, a run of higher Himalayan peaks ; one of the better reasons to travel through rather than fly between Bhutan's valleys. Punakha Dzong follows the same afternoon, still the winter residence of Je Khenpo and arguably Bhutan's most striking fortress.
March puts rhododendrons into bloom along the Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi, and closes with the Taktsang Monastery hike ; two to three hours uphill to a monastery built around Guru Rinpoche's meditation cave, 900 metres above the valley floor. If you asked us: do the hike in the morning, before the afternoon cloud rolls in over Paro valley.
per adult, based on 2 adults travelling together, breakfast and dinner daily, excluding international and internal airfare
