Hobbiton Movie Set, Waitomo's glowworm caves, and the Māori craft displays woven through Rotorua's geothermal stops.
Fifteen nights across both islands, paced for a family travelling with an infant and closing on a scenic train instead of another flight.
New Zealand with an infant works better than most destinations give it credit for. Flights are direct enough, hotels understand cots and highchairs without being asked twice, and there's no shortage of days built around doing very little at all. This one keeps Auckland light, gives Rotorua a farm and a spa to slow down in, and saves the drama for Milford Sound and a full day around Mt. Cook.
This is one of the New Zealand itineraries we've planned for a family before , fifteen nights, sixteen days across Auckland, Rotorua, Queenstown, Wanaka, Lake Tekapo and Christchurch, built for four adults and one infant travelling together. It's shared here to show what a family trip through New Zealand could look like. A version built around your own family's size, pace, and dates would look a little different , and that's the point.
Why This Trip
Late February into March sits at the tail of the South Island's summer, with warm days for Mt. Cook tour and clear evenings for stargazing at Lake Tekapo. The pace stays deliberately loose , a free day built into Auckland, another into Queenstown, and nothing scheduled before a reasonable hour.
The trip closes on the TranzAlpine, one of the more scenic train rides anywhere, dropping the family into Christchurch instead of another transfer. If you asked us: the free days matter more than any single attraction on this route , build them in first with an infant along, and let the sightseeing fill in around them.
per adult, based on 4 adults + 1 infant travelling together, excluding international airfare

Day By Day
A private transfer to Swiss-Belsuites Victoria Park, into a Two-Bedroom Suite with breakfast. Nothing planned for the rest of the day.
A half-day tour through the Domain, Waitemata Harbour and Queen Street, across the Harbour Bridge to Devonport and Ponsonby, with a stop at Mt. Victoria. The Sky Tower's 360-degree deck closes the evening.
A day with nothing booked, built in deliberately before the group moves on.
A full-day drive through Waikato farmland, a guided walk through the Hobbiton Movie Set's hobbit holes and the Green Dragon Inn, and a boat ride through the Waitomo Glowworm Caves before checking into Novotel Rotorua Lakeside.
A farm show and guided tour at the Agrodome , sheep shearing, animal feeding, and the kind of hands-on morning that tends to be the trip's first real hit with the youngest member along.
A geothermal walk and mud spa at Hell's Gate, then a flight south via Christchurch to Queenstown. The Skyline Gondola and three luge runs close out the evening.
A full-day coach and catamaran tour into Fiordland, past Mitre Peak and the cliffs and waterfalls that make Milford Sound the reason most people finally book New Zealand.
A free day, with an Onsen soak among the options if the family wants one.
A guided tour over the Lindis Pass into Canterbury, past Lake Pukaki's turquoise water to Mt. Cook Village, with free time to walk around New Zealand's highest peak.
A self-drive vehicle picked up from Queenstown, with a day trip to Wanaka , a U-Fly scenic flight over the Southern Alps is on offer, though it isn't included.
A self-drive to Lake Tekapo, checking into Peppers Bluewater Resort for two nights by the turquoise lake.
A free day around the lake and the Church of the Good Shepherd, with clear skies for stargazing most nights.
The self-drive car is dropped at Greymouth, and the TranzAlpine train carries the family through the Southern Alps into Christchurch by evening.
A free day, with Hanmer Springs' thermal pools or a Kaikoura whale-watching day trip on offer as optional add-ons.
A transfer to Christchurch Airport, connecting through Auckland for the flight home.
