This route treats Toronto as a proper opening rather than a layover, then hands the trip over to the Rockies for a self-drive stretch through Jasper and Banff, closing in Calgary. A rental car and two national parks give a small group of friends more range than a coach tour ever could.

Jasper opens with an evening wildlife tour on arrival, then whitewater rafting on the Athabasca River the next morning, before the Ice Explorer glacier tour and the glass-floored Skywalk out over the Athabasca Glacier.

Banff picks up with its own evening wildlife safari, a full-day tour to Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Emerald Lake, and the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain paired with the Upper Hot Springs , with an optional helicopter flight over the Three Sisters Peaks for anyone who wants the add-on.

If you asked us: pick up the rental car in Calgary rather than Toronto , the Rockies leg is the one worth self-driving, and Toronto's transit and walkability make a car more trouble than it's worth for those first two nights.

    Rafting on the Athabasca River

    A two-hour guided whitewater rafting run through Grade 2 rapids on the Athabasca River.

  5. Day 5

    Ice Explorer Glacier Tour & Glacier Skywalk

    A ride across the Athabasca Glacier aboard the Ice Explorer, followed by a walk on the glass-floored Skywalk over the canyon.

    Jasper to Banff

    A drive south to Banff, with an evening wildlife safari , a two-hour small-group bus tour through Banff National Park.

    Lake Louise, Moraine Lake & Emerald Lake

    A full-day tour from the Banff area covering Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Emerald Lake.

    Banff Gondola & Hot Springs
