This is one of the Italy itineraries we've planned for a group of friends before ; 7 nights, 8 days based in Sorrento and Naples, built for 8 adults travelling together. Staying put in Sorrento for five nights and using it as a base cuts down on the packing-and-moving friction that eight people travelling together usually run into ; everyone reconvenes at the same hotel each evening.

Late January keeps the Amalfi coast and Capri markedly quieter than in summer, with hotel rates to match, though it's worth noting several days here are intentionally left open for the group to split off as they like.

If you asked us: build in the Pompeii stop on the transfer day to Naples rather than as a separate excursion ; it's a natural stopover on the drive and saves a day.

The evening is free around Piazza Tasso and the Villa Comunale Gardens, with day trips to Amalfi, Ravello, Positano and Capri.

Naples Day 6–8

Italy Trip Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Arrival in Sorrento

    Land in Naples and transfer along the Bay of Naples to Sorrento. The evening is free around Piazza Tasso and the Villa Comunale Gardens.

  2. Day 2

    Amalfi & Ravello Day Trip

    A private vehicle for the day covers Amalfi's piazzas and Ravello's clifftop gardens, with stops at viewpoints along the coast road.

  3. Day 3

    Positano & Free Time in Sorrento

    A minivan to Positano for the morning, then the afternoon free back to Sorrento for shopping or the beach.

  4. Day 4

    Capri & the Blue Grotto

    A semi-private boat tour from Sorrento circling Capri, with free time on the island to explore Anacapri.

  5. Day 5

    Sorrento, at Leisure

    A day with nothing booked ; options include Procida island, a wine tour, or a cooking class, left to the group to choose.

  6. Day 6

    Transfer to Naples Via Pompeii

    A minivan transfer to Naples with a stop in Pompeii for a guided tour of the ruins, followed by a wine tasting.

  7. Day 7

    Mount Vesuvius Half-Day Tour

    A private half-day tour up to the crater rim of Mount Vesuvius, Europe's only active mainland volcano.

  8. Day 8

    Departure

    Transfer to Naples Airport for the flight home.
