Heritage
Castel del Monte, Matera's Sassi cave dwellings, and Alberobello's trulli architecture.
Trulli houses, sea caves and a wine estate in Puglia ; the Italy most first-timers never reach.
Rome, Florence and Venice cover the north and centre of a first Italy trip, and Puglia rarely makes the cut ; it's a different flight, a different pace, and a region most travellers only hear about after their first trip is already booked. This one goes there directly: Bari, Alberobello, Polignano a Mare and Lecce, before Milan closes.
This is one of the Italy itineraries we've planned for a group of friends before ; 12 nights, 13 days through Puglia and on to Milan, built for 3 adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what an off-the-beaten-path route through Italy could look like. A version built around your own group's size, pace and dates would look a little different ; and that's the point.
Why This Trip
Alberobello's trulli ; the conical-roofed stone houses unique to this part of Italy ; and Matera's cave dwellings sit nowhere near a standard Rome-Florence-Venice route, which is exactly why they hold up as a genuine detour rather than a rebranded highlight.
The coastal towns do double duty here: Polignano a Mare's cave-boat tour and Otranto's sea stacks give the trip a beach-holiday texture that the north of Italy doesn't really offer.
If you asked us: the Negroamaro winery visit near Lecce, with its Gaudi-style hermitage on the grounds, is the stop most groups don't expect and remember longest ; better than another cathedral at this point in the trip.
