Culture
Reykjavik's downtown streets and Akureyri, Iceland's low-key northern capital.
Ten nights of self-driving Iceland's Ring Road , the East Fjords, Lake Myvatn and Akureyri included…
Most Iceland trips stay within a few hours of Reykjavik , the Golden Circle, the south coast as far as Jokulsarlon, then back. This one keeps going: a full, self-driven loop around the island, through the East Fjords, Lake Myvatn's geothermal fields, and Akureyri in the north, places a standard week never reaches.
This is one of the Iceland itineraries we've planned for a couple before , ten nights, eleven days self-driving the full Ring Road, built for 2 adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a longer, wider route around Iceland could look like. A version built around your own dates and pace would look a little different , and that's the point.
Why This Trip
The East Fjords rarely make it into a shorter Iceland itinerary , the black sand beach at Stokksnes with Vestrahorn behind it, the art village of Djupivogur, and a hike to Hengifoss, one of Iceland's tallest waterfalls, all sit well past where most tours turn around.
Lake Myvatn adds a geothermal landscape that looks nothing like the south coast , bubbling mud pools at Hverir, the lava field at Dimmuborgir, and a hidden hot spring cave made famous by a television show , before the road continues on to Akureyri, Iceland's low-key second city.
Ten nights is longer than most Iceland trips run, and that is the point , it is what makes a full loop of the island possible without spending every day behind the wheel.
