Culture
The National Museum of Anthropology, Taxco's silver tradition and Oaxaca's markets and artisan workshops.
A 9-night off the beaten path holiday to Mexico across Mexico City, Taxco, Oaxaca, Mérida and Holbox, with Monte Albán and a cenote day.
Nine nights that trade Cancun for a silver town, a Zapotec mountain city and a car-free island. Most first trips to Mexico stay on the Caribbean coast. This one covers more of the country: the colonial silver town of Taxco, the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán above Oaxaca, a cenote near Mérida and the car-free island of Holbox at the very end.
This is one of the Mexico itineraries we've planned for a group before, nine nights, ten days across Mexico City, Oaxaca, Mérida and Holbox, built for twelve adults travelling together. It's shared here to show what a longer, more offbeat route through Mexico could look like. A version built around your own group's size, pace and dates would look a little different, and that's the point.
Why This Trip
The trip is built as four short stays rather than one long one. Mexico City opens it with the Zócalo and the Anthropology Museum, then Taxco, Cuernavaca and a pre-Hispanic silver mine. Oaxaca adds Monte Albán's mountain plateau and its markets, and Mérida adds a cenote that most Cancun trips never visit. Holbox closes the trip as an island with no cars, shallow turquoise water and a long, quiet beach. After nine nights of moving, it is the right place to stop. If you asked us: the Copper Canyon train deserves its own trip. It needs several days of its own, and squeezing it into this route would turn a relaxed holiday into a rushed one.
