Greece Travel Guide

Santorini sunsets, Mykonos beaches and the ancient wonders of Athens.

The Acropolis sits above Athens, unbothered by the traffic and centuries moving beneath it. On Santorini, a blue-domed church catches the evening light the way it does in every photo you've seen. On a smaller island nobody markets, a taverna owner brings out whatever came off the boat that morning.

Greece is really several trips stitched together by ferry schedules. Athens has history and food in the same square kilometre. Santorini and Mykonos carry a global reputation. Crete is nearly its own country. Pick the wrong combination and you'll only see one version of what Greece is.

Why Greece, and Why With Us

Why Greece, and Why with us

Greece runs on philoxenia , hospitality extended to strangers as a matter of course. A taverna owner who brings out a complimentary dessert because he liked the conversation. That warmth shows up island to island.

Ferry schedules don't always connect conveniently, and island-hopping five stops in ten days usually means more time on boats than beaches. We'd rather guests settle into two or three islands than skim five.

We've been building Greece itineraries since 2013. Not templates, routes built around how you like to travel. We pick the region before the itinerary, and we'll tell you when trying to cover too much isn't worth the transit time. If we wouldn't book it for our own family, we won't book it for you. This is our travel guide to Greece. You can find our opinions on what places to include, what time to visit, how long your visit should be and more.

Greece runs warm and dry most of the year. Crowds and ferry reliability are the real variables.

Spring (April–May)

Best for: Mild weather, fewer crowds

Ideal destinations: Athens, Crete

If you asked us: Our favourite window for Athens , comfortable temperatures before summer heat sets in.

Summer (June–August)

Best for: The islands, warm-water swimming

Ideal destinations: Santorini, Mykonos, Crete

If you asked us: Peak season across the Aegean , book accommodation and ferries months ahead.

Autumn (September–October)

Best for: Comfortable temperatures, warm sea

Ideal destinations: Santorini, Naxos, Crete

If you asked us: Our top recommendation , the sea stays warm and crowds thin after August.

Winter (November–March)

Best for: Athens sightseeing, lower rates

Ideal destinations: Athens

If you asked us: Most islands scale back significantly , this is really an Athens-focused season.

Suggested Trip Duration

7–8 days Athens and Santorini cover the highlights for a first trip through Greece.
9–11 days (our most common recommendation) Add Mykonos or Crete without rushing any of the regions.
12–14 days Room for a quieter island like Naxos and island-hopping exploration.
15+ days For repeat visitors slowing down further, or combining Greece with Turkey.
A Culinary Journey Through Greece

A Culinary Journey Through Greece

A proper Greek salad, made with tomatoes that actually taste of something, is a different dish from what's served abroad. A taverna's daily catch, grilled simply, usually beats anything elaborate. Crete's olive oil is considered among the finest in the world, and Santorini's volcanic-soil wines are found almost nowhere else.

Quick tip: Ask what came in on the boat that morning rather than ordering from a printed menu.

Culture & Traditions

Culture & Traditions

Greek culture runs on ancient history and Orthodox Christian tradition, often within the same day. A Sunday church service or the volta, the traditional evening stroll many towns still observe, tells you more about daily life than any single monument.

Travenza tip: If invited into a local's home or business for a coffee, accept it , the gesture is rarely about transaction.

Shopping in Greece: From Olive Oil to Handmade Sandals

Shopping in Greece: From Olive Oil to Handmade Sandals

Crete's olive oil, bought directly from a producer, travels well. Santorini's volcanic wines are worth bringing home if logistics allow. Handmade leather sandals are a genuine island tradition, worth seeking from an actual cobbler.

Travenza tip: Buy sandals from a workshop that measures and makes them while you wait , the fit is considerably better.

Getting Around Greece

Ferries are the backbone of any island-hopping itinerary, and schedules vary considerably by season. We build every route around actual timetables and use domestic flights for longer hops. On the islands, Crete needs a car; Santorini is walkable or scooter-friendly.

Travenza tip: Book high-speed ferry tickets in advance during peak summer , popular routes sell out days ahead in July and August.

Visa Guide

Greece is part of the Schengen Area, and most Indian travellers need a Schengen visa arranged in advance. We handle documentation end to end, and recommend applying at least three to four weeks ahead.

Why Greece Stays With You

Greece is remembered for what never made it into a postcard , a taverna meal that ran three hours longer than planned, a quiet cove reached because a local pointed the way. Most first trips cover Athens and Santorini with Mykonos built in; return visits go quieter, to Naxos, Paros or an island most guests have never heard of.
