Kenya Travel Guide

Where the Great Migration meets Africa's original safari story

The Maasai Mara holds one of the largest wildlife concentrations left on earth, and the Great Migration crossing its rivers is still the benchmark every other safari gets measured against. Nairobi runs modern and chaotic just a short flight from all of it. The Kenyan coast has calm, warm water and centuries of Swahili trading history.

Kenya rewards guests who give the safari real time rather than a rushed two-day loop. The Mara alone can fill four or five days properly, and pairing it with a coastal stretch or a second reserve changes the whole shape of the trip.

Why Kenya, and Why With Us

Why Kenya, and Why with us

Kenya runs on guiding expertise built up over generations , a Maasai guide who reads animal behaviour the way most people read a map. That knowledge is the actual product on a safari, more than the lodge or the vehicle.

We plan Kenya safaris around game drive timing and real transfer distances between parks, not a rushed multi-park itinerary that spends more time on light aircraft than on game drives. If a second park doesn't add enough to justify the flight, we'll say so.

We've been building itineraries since 2013. Not templates, routes built around how you like to travel. We pick the region before the itinerary, and we'll tell you when trying to cover too much isn't worth the transit time. If we wouldn't book it for our own family, we won't book it for you. This is our travel guide to Kenya. You can find our opinions on what places to include, what time to visit, how long your visit should be and more.

Best Time to Visit Kenya

Kenya runs warm year-round near the equator. Rainfall and the migration's location are the real variables.

Dry Season (June–October)

Best for: The Great Migration, reliable game viewing

Ideal destinations: Maasai Mara, Amboseli

If you asked us: This is peak safari season , the migration's river crossings typically happen July through September.

Short Dry Spell (January–February)

Best for: Calving season, fewer crowds

Ideal destinations: Maasai Mara, Amboseli

If you asked us: A strong alternative window , dry, warm, and considerably quieter than peak season.

Long Rains (March–May)

Best for: Lower rates, lush landscapes

Ideal destinations: Diani Beach

If you asked us: Many camps close or discount heavily , we generally steer safari guests away from this window.

Short Rains (November)

Best for: Green season, fewer crowds

Ideal destinations: Maasai Mara

If you asked us: Rain tends to arrive in short afternoon bursts, and the landscape turns green fast.

14+ days For repeat visitors exploring Kenya's ecosystems more deeply, or combining Kenya with Tanzania for a broader East African safari experience.
A Culinary Journey Through Kenya

A Culinary Journey Through Kenya

Nyama choma, grilled meat, usually goat or beef, is close to a national institution, best from a proper roadside spot rather than a hotel menu. Most safari camps run their own kitchens, and a bush breakfast set up mid-drive is worth the early start. Kenyan coffee, grown in the highlands, ranks among the best in the world.

Quick tip: Ask your camp about a bush breakfast or sundowner setup , most build this into a game drive without extra charge.

Culture & Traditions

Culture & Traditions

The Maasai people's culture runs deep across southern Kenya, and a village visit arranged through a reputable camp, not a roadside stop, gives a considerably more honest picture than a quick photo opportunity. Kenya is home to more than forty ethnic groups, each with its own language and tradition.

Travenza tip: Ask questions rather than just taking photos on a village visit , most Maasai hosts are happy to talk about daily life if you show real interest.

Shopping in Kenya

Shopping in Kenya

Maasai beadwork, bought directly from a village or a fair-trade cooperative, is the honest souvenir here. Kenyan coffee, bought from a proper roaster, travels well. Carved wood pieces from the coast are worth seeking out from an established workshop rather than a roadside stall.

Travenza tip: Buy coffee whole-bean, not ground, and check the roast date , Kenyan coffee is best used within a few weeks of roasting.

Getting Around Kenya

Light aircraft connect Nairobi with the Maasai Mara and other reserves in under an hour, and this is how most safari itineraries move between parks , considerably faster than the road, which can take five or six hours to the Mara alone. Within a reserve, your camp's safari vehicle and guide handle everything.

Travenza tip: Pack light for the internal flights , small bush planes have strict weight limits, usually around 15kg including hand luggage.

Visa Guide

Most Indian travellers need an e-visa for Kenya, applied online before travel. We confirm the latest requirements and handle documentation, and recommend applying at least two to three weeks ahead.

Why Kenya Stays With You

Kenya is remembered for scale , a migration herd stretching further than you can see, a guide who spotted a leopard from a shape in a tree half a kilometre away. Most first trips are the Maasai Mara with a coastal finish; return visits add Amboseli, Lake Nakuru or a Tanzania extension.
