Germany Travel Guide

Neuschwanstein Castle sits on a hillside looking exactly like the fairy-tale illustration it inspired.

Neuschwanstein Castle sits on a hillside looking exactly like the fairy-tale illustration it inspired. Munich's beer halls run on a tradition older than the country's constitution. Berlin wears its twentieth century openly, a stretch of the Wall left standing on purpose.

Germany rarely resolves into one trip. Bavaria has castles and beer gardens. Berlin has history and nightlife. The Rhine Valley has vineyards and river towns barely touched by the centuries between them.

Why Germany, and Why With Us

Why Germany, and Why with us

Germany runs on precision that shows up everywhere, not just the trains. A beer garden serving the same recipe since before the country's founding. That attention to detail carries through the food and hospitality alike.

Bavaria, Berlin and the Rhine Valley can feel like three separate trips squeezed into one. We'd rather build a route around two regions done well than three done in passing.

We've been building Germany itineraries since 2013. Not templates, routes built around how you like to travel. We pick the region before the itinerary, and we'll tell you when trying to cover too much isn't worth the transit time. If we wouldn't book it for our own family, we won't book it for you. This is our travel guide to Germany. You can find our opinions on what places to include, what time to visit, how long your visit should be and more.

Germany runs through four distinct seasons, and the right one depends on what's driving the itinerary.

Spring (April–May)

If you asked us: Our favourite window for the Romantic Road, before summer's crowds arrive.

Summer (June–August)

If you asked us: Beer garden season is in full swing; Oktoberfest itself actually starts in September.

Autumn (September–October)

If you asked us: Oktoberfest runs mid-September to early October , accommodation books out months ahead.

Winter (November–March)

Suggested Trip Duration

7–8 days Munich, Neuschwanstein and the Romantic Road cover the highlights for a first trip through Germany.
9–11 days (our most common recommendation) Add the Rhine Valley or Berlin without rushing any of the regions.
12–14 days Room for the Black Forest or Cologne and additional exploration.
15+ days For repeat visitors slowing down further, or combining Germany with Switzerland or Austria.
A Culinary Journey Through Germany

A Culinary Journey Through Germany

Bavaria does pretzels, weisswurst and schnitzel best in a proper beer hall setting. The Rhine Valley pairs its Riesling with lighter river-town cooking. Berlin, shaped by decades of Turkish immigration, does some of the best döner kebab outside Turkey itself.

Quick tip: Order a beer specific to the region you're in rather than a familiar international brand.

Culture & Traditions

Culture & Traditions

Germany carries its history openly, from Berlin's memorials to the preserved sections of the Wall. Bavaria leans into tradition with real enthusiasm , folk costumes and beer halls are maintained because locals still value them, not performed for tourists. Punctuality and precision shape daily life well beyond the trains.

Travenza tip: If visiting a Holocaust memorial or Cold War site, allow real time and quiet reflection rather than a quick photo stop.

Shopping in Germany: From Christmas Markets to Riesling

Shopping in Germany: From Christmas Markets to Riesling

Christmas markets offer handcrafted ornaments that make a far better souvenir than anything mass-produced. Riesling from the Rhine Valley, bought directly from a vineyard, is worth bringing home. Black Forest cuckoo clocks, from a proper workshop, remain a distinctive traditional craft.

Travenza tip: Buy handmade wooden ornaments rather than mass-produced glass baubles , the handmade versions rarely make it to export markets.

Getting Around Germany

Germany's ICE high-speed trains connect Munich, Berlin, Cologne and beyond efficiently. The Romantic Road and Black Forest both suit a private driver better, since the smaller towns sit off the main rail lines.

Travenza tip: Book ICE tickets in advance , routes sell out during Oktoberfest and the Christmas market season.

Visa Guide

Germany is part of the Schengen Area, and most Indian travellers need a Schengen visa arranged in advance. We handle documentation end to end, and recommend applying at least three to four weeks ahead.

Why Germany Stays With You

Germany is remembered for how seriously it takes getting things right , a beer hall recipe unchanged for centuries, a castle that looks unreal and turns out to be exactly as described. Most first trips cover Munich and the Romantic Road; return visits add Berlin, the Rhine Valley or the Black Forest.
