Mexico Travel Guide

Ancient ruins, turquoise coasts and flavours that stay with you

Chichén Itzá's pyramid still draws a crowd at the spring and autumn equinox, when the setting sun casts a shadow shaped like a serpent down its staircase, exactly as the Maya designed it centuries ago. Cancún's water runs an almost unreal turquoise, backed by white sand that stays cool underfoot even at midday. Mexico City's food scene has become one of the most talked-about in the world, taco stands included.

Mexico has beaches, ancient history and a serious culinary culture in one country, and most itineraries pick two of the three rather than trying to cover everything. The Yucatán Peninsula alone can fill a week; Mexico City deserves its own separate trip entirely.

Why Mexico, and Why With Us

Why Mexico, and Why with us

Mexico runs on hospitality that's warm without much ceremony , a Oaxaca market vendor who insists you try something before buying, a Tulum beach club host who remembers your order by the second day. That same warmth carries through a Mexico City taco stand and a Riviera Maya resort alike.

Mexico's regions run different enough that a rushed itinerary covering Cancún, Mexico City and Oaxaca in one short trip usually means seeing very little of any properly. We build most Mexico trips around two states done well, sequenced by real flight or drive times.

We've been building itineraries since 2013. Not templates, routes built around how you like to travel. We pick the region before the itinerary, and we'll tell you when trying to cover too much isn't worth the transit time. If we wouldn't book it for our own family, we won't book it for you. This is our Mexico Travel Guide. You can find our opinions on what places to include, what time to visit, how long your visit should be and more.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Mexico?

Mexico runs warm most of the year. Rain and hurricane risk on the coast are the real variables.

Winter (December–April)

Best for: The driest, most reliable weather

Ideal destinations: Quintana Roo, Mexico City, Yucatán

If you asked us: Our top pick across the whole country , dry season, and the safest window for coastal travel.

Spring Equinox (March)

Best for: Chichén Itzá's serpent shadow phenomenon

Ideal destinations: Yucatán

If you asked us: The site draws serious crowds for this specific event , book well ahead if the equinox is the reason for your visit.

Summer (May–October)

Best for: Lower rates, lush landscapes

Ideal destinations: Mexico City, Oaxaca

If you asked us: Hot and humid on the coast, with real hurricane risk from June through October , we lean itineraries inland during this window.

Shoulder Season (November)

Best for: Good weather, thinner crowds before peak season

Ideal destinations: Quintana Roo, Yucatán

If you asked us: A strong window before December's crowds and rates both climb.

Best for: beaches, cenotes, an easy resort base. Home to Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Tulum, with some of the most consistently turquoise water in the Caribbean. If you asked us: book a cenote swim, a natural limestone sinkhole, as a half-day trip from wherever you're staying , it's a completely different experience from a beach day. Must-Do Experiences in Quintana Roo: Tulum ruins & beach; Cenote swimming; Playa del Carmen's Fifth Avenue; Xcaret or Xel-Há eco-park; Isla Mujeres day trip.

Suggested Trip Duration

7–8 days Quintana Roo with Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Tulum captures the essential highlights for a first trip through Mexico.
9–11 days (our most common recommendation) Add Mexico City or the Yucatán to explore ancient ruins and culture without rushing between destinations.
12–14 days Room for a third region like Oaxaca or the Pacific coast allowing time to absorb each region's character and cuisine.
15+ days For repeat visitors exploring Mexico's regions more deeply, or combining Mexico with the USA for a broader North American experience.
A Culinary Journey Through Mexico

A Culinary Journey Through Mexico

Mexican food resists a single description more than almost any national cuisine , tacos al pastor in Mexico City, cochinita pibil in the Yucatán, mole in Oaxaca, each fiercely regional. A proper taco stand with a visible local queue usually beats a sit-down restaurant with a laminated menu.

Quick tip: Order whatever the taco stand is known for specifically, not a mixed plate , the best stalls do one or two things extremely well.

Culture & Traditions

Culture & Traditions

Mexico's Indigenous heritage runs alongside Spanish colonial history in a way that shapes daily life, not just archaeological sites , Day of the Dead traditions, market rituals and regional festivals all carry real meaning beyond the tourist version most visitors see.

Travenza tip: If your dates align with Día de los Muertos in early November, it's worth experiencing at least partially, even outside Mexico City's well-known parade.

Shopping in Mexico

Shopping in Mexico

Oaxaca's hand-woven textiles and black pottery, bought directly from a market stall or cooperative, are the standout craft here. Taxco, in the state of Guerrero, is Mexico's silver capital, worth seeking out for jewellery specifically.

Travenza tip: Bargain at markets with good humour, but not at fixed-price shops or galleries.

Getting Around Mexico

Domestic flights connect Mexico City, Cancún and other regional hubs quickly, and this is how most multi-region itineraries move. Within the Riviera Maya, a private driver covers the coast comfortably; Mexico City itself is best explored on foot and by rideshare given the traffic.

Travenza tip: Don't rent a self-drive car for Mexico City specifically , traffic and parking are both a real challenge, and a private driver or rideshare works considerably better.

Visa Guide

Most Indian travellers need a visa for Mexico, arranged in advance, though holding a valid US visa can sometimes ease the process , we confirm current requirements at the time of booking. We handle documentation, recommending at least three to four weeks ahead.

Why Mexico Stays With You

Mexico is remembered for how much it holds in one country , a pyramid built with an astronomical precision that still works exactly as designed, a taco that costs almost nothing and outshines expensive meals elsewhere, a beach so blue it looks edited. Most first trips cover the Riviera Maya with a Mexico City stop; return visits add Oaxaca or the Pacific coast.
